  1. 4340 Electrical Problem

Again, thanks to everyone for your suggestions. Armand, I'm glad you got yours going again, and I have done the same thing to resolve the issue. I didn't go with the gear reduction starter though, just the direct-drive like original. Only $135 shipped to my house, so I couldn't pass that up. I...
  2. 4340 Electrical Problem

Sorry for the confusion, DIY. This tractor did not arrive with a "master switch", which are called a "battery disconnect" here on our side of the big pond. So, while that can't be a problem, it is a convenience I'm going to add. If I don't trade for a New Holland instead :D Spent some time...
  3. 4340 Electrical Problem

To answer the questions above: I have bypassed the key switch, I have bypassed the starter button, and the clutch safety switch has been bypassed for decades. I have tried shorting across the two large terminals on the solenoid. Again, the starter and solenoid worked when taken to the repair...
  4. 4340 Electrical Problem

Thanks for your suggestions. I spent a good portion of New Year's Day poking and prodding (and cursing) the tractor. I replaced the ground cable, which was slightly worn. No change. Then went through all wiring again, it still has the one "click" before all circuits are dead, requiring the reset...
  5. 4340 Electrical Problem

First, some background information. 4340 with metal cab. Replaced key switch and charging indicator lamp last summer, then everything was working fine. Then, two weeks ago, the starter would not turn over, not even a click. Tried charging the battery, installed a new battery, even hooked jumper...
  6. Reverse Gone!

Yes, it is a shuttle shift model. I have the big repair manual, and probably will at least begin to tackle it myself. Too many things going on right now and never enough time! Thanks for the information! Greg
  7. Reverse Gone!

My 4240 is ok except that now the forward/reverse lever doesn't change the direction of the tractor. I am stuck in forward. The lever moves fine, all gears work ok. Anything I should check externally, or does the tractor have to be broken apart? Hope not, as I don't have a shop or the tools...
  8. Wiring Short??

The problem is in the key switch, not the start button. If I insert the key all the way, then pull it back out until it's barely catching in the keyway, it makes electrical contact and we can fire right up. Found a new key switch for US$44, but lack of work equals lack of cash, so.....
  9. Wiring Short??

Perhaps I need a rubber mallet? The Fonzie method it what I use to keep the radio and wipers working on my F-350. My hands are staying sore....
  10. Wiring Short??

Battery went flat within 2 hours of my shutting off the engine. RPM's had been up over the 1500 range. No problems indicated with the charging system. Seems like something grounded (earthed) out, and I'm guessing within the tachometer system, since inserting the key will cause the tach to read...
  11. Wiring Short??

My 4340 has the round, toothless key with a push button ignition switch. Went to start it today, after having used it 2 hours earlier, and the battery was dead. But I saw that when I inserted the key, the tachometer would jump to 2000 RPM, sometime staying there, sometimes falling back to zero...
  12. severe lack of brakes

Brake fluid may solve your problem altogether. Don't forget to bleed the air from the lines, if the brake fluid resevoir is empty. Perhaps it isn't totally empty, but low enough that when going down the hill, air was able to enter the brake lines and mess you up. Good luck!
  13. Power Steering Leak

My 4340 is leaking fluid at both tie-rod cylinders. Can one replace these seals? Or should I take it to some sort of specialist? Thanks, Greg
  14. Starter or Soelenoid?

Thanks for the help! [s]Happy[/] Prosperous New Year to everybody! Greg
  15. Starter or Soelenoid?

I need a confirmation here (no, I'm not Catholic.) When trying to start my 4340 using the key, I see the lamps on the dash dim a little, but nothing happens at the starter. I can start the tractor by shorting across the positive connections on the starter and the soelenoid. This does indicate...
  16. 5211-All levers/controls completley understood-Property Closed

Hey Ken, I haven't been here for a while, but remember your other posts. Glad you got the farm. and the family is sharing the fun with you. Hope you've had a merry Christmas and y'all have a fun 2007.. Greg
  17. 5211-purchased with land-Any Help in understanding this tractor

Hey Ken, and welcome. Since you're buying land in TEXAS, I'm guessing it's not one of the mini-ranches ou mentioned. When the deal goes through, post a few pics of the place, and tell us about it. These little tractors (or the bigger ones) are a LOT stronger/sturdier than they look. I have a...
  18. Auxilliary lights

Thanks for the input, gentlemen. I nam mounting these to some spare holes on the rear of my loader frame, near the windshield. I'm working on some type of isolation or vibration dampening mount. I'll keep you posted.
  19. 4341 cab ac dripping

My 4340 has a hose for each the left and right sides. When I first bought it (used) one of them was clogged, and sometimes water would splash down from the little tray where the sunshade is. Try blowing out these hoses (the one that is dripping on your step may be partially blocked, and not...
  20. Auxilliary lights

Does anyone know the output of the alternator on my 4340? I want to add some auxilliary lights front and rear, but don't want to overload the electrical system. How much lighting have you guys added to your machinery?
