Hi, does anyone have the wiring diagram or explanation for the conversion to an alternator from a standard dynamo on 3011 please. The alternator is a Lucas. Thanks

On the back of the lucas, if its the most common type, are 3 terminals. the 2 big ones are joined together. You can either buy a plug to fit which is held in with a wire clip (preferred) or use female spade terminals. The big one goes direct to to the battery , no switch, through the ammeter if fitted if you want. Use a fairly thick wire. the small one goes direct to the battery as well, but through the dash warning light if fitted AND A SWITCH. You can use the origional key if you can identify the correct terminals. If you don't use a switch it will run the battery down when the engine is not running. You will probably have to fabricate a mounting bracket and get a pulley of the correct width, sometimes the origional pulley will fit. Dont worry if the alternator pulley you fit is bigger than the origional lucas one.

Brilliant Dave, thanks for the reply. Just to clarify though about the small wire. Does it run through the bulb or is the bulb in parallel? many thanks again, i've had the alternator on there for a long time but just never wired it in! Now i want to go ploughing in the dark!!!!

Through the bulb, that way when the key's on and the engines stopped there is a current that exites the alternator flowing through the bulb lighting it up. as soon as the engine starts the current is then the same each side of the bulb so it goes out.
Simple innit ? Thats why it won't charge if the bulbs blown.
Dave
