4340 pto shaft

i have a friend with a 4340 .he took the pto shaft out with out putting it in gear. now the shaft won`t go in far enough, lacks about the thickness of the bearing from going all the way back in. any help or ideas would be welcome.thanks alan

PTO shaft, you mean the rear shaft of about a 60-70cm length, or the replaceable endpiece ?

If the shaft, drop the pump plate on the bottom of the diff housing (4340 might already have the engine driven pump so you might not find a pump on it) and guide it, as well as the shift sleeve, into place.

Dont forget to drain the oil, or park the tractor nose down into a steep ditch, before dropping the pump plate or youll be covered in oil.

this is a 540 pto only tractor.it has shuttle shift. i dropped the front cover on the bottom, it has 2 gears on the bottom shaft. the book says it`s a 1piece shaft.i cant see anything, but it has got to go forward about a inch. i`m at a loss

yes, it is the shaft that sticks out the back,6 spline,540 only pto hyd.pump is on the front .also has shuttle shift .the rear shaft feels like it will go all the way into the forward shaft.i think the front shaft needs to go towards the motor but it won`t do you know if this tractor has 2 or 3 shafts in the bottom?

Hi,

The long front shaft has to locate in a bearing right at the front of the gearbox. If it's come out of it you may need to lift the 2 front gears a little to guide it back into the bearing.

ok i`ll try that .thanks; i can`t get the engage/shift shaft(tube) that the pto shaft goes trough to slide up on the gear on the front shaft?should i be able to?
