I used my 4340 with loader to cut down a field today. Took about 2 hours. Immediately following this I started to move a pile of hard dirt. Two scoops in the tractor started to act weird. The speed shifter (forward and reverse) went opposite. Like when I moved it forward it worked in reverse and when I moved it back it worked forward. The engine started to run hard. Then I lost loader control. It would only go down and not up. Then I lost power steering. Smoke came out of the engine compartment and I shut the engine off. I checked the fluid levels in the power steering, brake fluid, and hydro. I waited a few seconds and started it back up again. Everything worked fine. Checked Any ideas on what is up?

Hi,

This is scary but I've had a Super engine which would run Backwards !! It melted the air inlet pipes.
Sounds like you have too.

Mike

a diesel can start the opposite way, if you go into a heap of something with the loader and almost kill the engine under load it can start backwards. but its a one in a million chance id say.

Its not that weird for an engine to run in reverse hoever the lubrication will also flow in reverse and suck your bearings dry. Once a co worker tried to kill the V10 Benz in a Demag crate with a faulty stop solenoid by pulling all hydraulic levers at once. It ran in reverse and damaged the bearings before they could put a rag in the air filter pipe.

A classic is sling starting with a PTO shaft and realising you have BOTH tractors in reverse PTO gear...

It will have reduced performance in reverse because the valve overlap is wrong.

On some brick V8 engines, hotrodders changed inlet and exhaust ports to get free exhaust flow, and push fresh air in through the narrow exhaust ports with a blower of a Detroit Diesel 2 stroke
