there has been a knocking noise from the gearbox of my 4712 .took the top off the box today as had problem with 1st and reverse gears selector . theres a tooth off a cog ,the cog is 4th from the front on the bottom shaft.
are more of the teeth likley to break off ,is the cog itself replacable ,is it a very big job to take the gearbox down to repair the damaged .

Bottom shaft is difficult, then you need a special tool (home made expander) to pull out the reduction gears, before you can take out the layshaft. You can take out the top shaft when only taking the engine away and the input shafts in the front.
I had the same problem on my 3011 and had to split in 3.

ok thanks renze, its very nice to meet you great site.
is that layshaft one piece or do the gears come off it.
now that I know what its called will make it possible to look for other posts . seems to be a big job ,might leave it till later on as just use it for pto, hydraulics and light work.
many thanks.

Dont bother, apart from some dealers, i think i am the only one that has fully stripped a gearbox once because nobody ever mentioned it here on the forum...

Yes the layshaft has a big keyway over the full length, gears and spacers are stacked onto it.

thanks renze,
theres a zetor rear end in a hedge nearby ,think I'll get the gearbox and just transplant it into my tractor if I'tll suit,be the easiest thing and keep the broken one for parts.
bye greenfields

The rear end was 4712 specific. four cylinder rear ends were longer, the 3011 had the same gears but was shorter.
