I have begun the process of replacing the slave cylinders and brake pads on my 1989 5245. The disassembly has been pretty smooth and rather quick. I removed the bolts that hold the gear portal to the brake drum housing. The gear portal has swung down so it is vertical. My problem is that the gear portal housing only slides out approximately 5 mm from the brake drum housing and then stops. Is there a secret to fully remove the portal gear housing from the brake drum housing or do I need to use a little more muscle...???
Yes there is more to undo. Release handbrake & undo brake band adjustment which comes through the top lourvered plate take top locknut off & undo the other flush with the end of the bolt this should give enough expansion of the brake band to get over the lip on the brake drum. This will allow you to draw the portal out with the brake drum. Beware the portal assembly is very heavy I use a engine crane to hang the portal off
