I bought this tractor off an old friend who had it sitting around outside for a long time. I then relaced injectors, valves and cylinder head gaskets. every thing else was working until we used it to tow the tow behind hayrake just after christmas. (yes I am in New Zealand, not raking snow). one problem we encountered was that the left side brake must have been touching and heated to a near dangerous level. the other thing i realised after was that we lost a fair ammount of gearbox oil due to old seals on the hydraulic arms of 3 point linkage. To remove the arms I have to lift the linkage at least half way. I tried but it would not lift. I checked the oil and found that it only just showed on the dip stick. I then topped the oil up to the top and tried again. it would not lift! I shifted the pump/pto in to every position but nothing would work. Not even the PTO. I checked the workshop manual which left me reasnobly clue less. I think the pto is mechanical not like on my 8011 where I believe its hydraulic.
The workshop manual mentioned that the magnetic filter has to be cleaned every 60 hours and the bottom cleaned out once in a while. This tractor probably hadn't had anything done in the last 10 years. (nor had my 8011, I possibly need to clean the gearbox and engine filters)
So by not being able to engage PTO i have a feeling that something in the gearbox might have come out of line, nothing to do with low oil level? can anyone help ?

Your pto lever is on the floor nearest your left foot.
It has 4 positions, start with the lever straight up closest to the seat.
This is Ground drive.
One notch down Neutral.
Next down PTO and hydraulic pump drive.
Fully down Hydraulic pump only. So that you can check the correct levers position first.
Check that the roll pin in the lever isn't broken or slipping. After that you might be looking at a new pump.

Thanks, I have tried all positions with no luck.
I moved the lever with engine running and could feel something selecting. Tried the same thing with engine off and you can hear gears beeing moved inside. Does that mean the PTO is hydraulic driven ?
Being stationary I could not select PTO driving off wheels- top position. The time before I had it running I had a hard time to move the PTO lever between positions.

Here a post on this site from someone who had no pto or lift working, read this and maybe yours might be the same.

I finally got round to start looking for my problem. For l e j found I had a lot of moisture in the sump.
Nothing seems broken or bent from the PTO/hydraulic gear lever,
link or gear fork.
When I turn the PTO shaft on the back it turns freely in the neutral and hydraulic pump only positions.
The hydraulic pump turns, a little stiff but I think it's supposed to be like that.
Previous I had problems engaging the PTO , I could not engage anything.
Having the backend open I would say the problem is further forward. Could I have a problem with the PTO/hydraulic clutch?

Had the top off the gear box and the back end. I figured out that with PTO/pump you had to move the high - low ratio leaver and the hydraulic pump started working. Was good taking a peak under the covers and a thorough clean of the rear end and all possible filters.
