6945 rear axle bearings

Hi Folks!

I noticed today that my tractor's left rear wheel was at an odd angle

When I opened up the bearing cover on the inside of the portal I found that both lock-nuts had been pulled straight off, and the inner taper bearing was completely loose. There was no thread at all left on one locknut, and the other had a little thread left.

At first I thought the axle itself was okay - um... nope. The threads have been stripped from that too.

I did manage to kind of fit one locknut in such a position as to kind of keep the bearing in place, so that I could move the tractor around the yard - but of course I need to find a permanent solution and fairly fast.

Is it safe to move the tractor like this or could the whole axle fall out?!

What do people think is the easiest and most cost effective fix?

Are there other zetors that use the identical portal to my "1978 vintage" 6945 - thinking about the possibility of locating parts from a breaker?

Hi,

Don't move the tractor. You could knock teeth off the gears !!
As the shaft is poor, a cheap remedy would be weld the nuts to it. Make sure you have no play before you do it as you'll only get one chance. It's a bit of a bodge but its cheap and it'll work.

Getting the wheel shaft firmly in place and the bearing seated fully is going to be hard though - although maybe it would help to remove the wheel?

Well it's kind of fixed, for the time being - I think.

I got a pair of new locknuts from the local Zetor dealer, and managed to get these on tightly. In fact despite the axle thread being damaged the new nuts went on so well that I decided to forgo the welding for the time being and just keep my eye on things.

The other reason for not welding it up was that I'm not _absolutely_ sure that the wheel is straight now. There doesn't appear to be any play though and it doesn't look like it's going to fall off any more!

It could be an optical illusion due to the fact that it is fitted at a wider track setting that the wheel on the other side. At some point I'll fit the rim on the inside of the wheel flange like it is on the right hand side - this might reduce the load on the bearings somewhat too.

There is sold thousands of UR1 series zetor in Finland....

I think you can buy "new" axle from local tractor breaker. My rough estimate about price is 1 euro/kg.

Yes indeed! I will open it up completely as soon as possible and try and asess the full extent of the damage - my local K-maatalous Zetor dealer has the outer bearings in stock - but I also thought that a phone call to Isojoen konehalli might be an idea - at least they advertise tractor breaking on their website.

I do need to get my own tracotr back in action ASAP - I have borrowed a Massey Ferguson 165 for the time being, which is a little too small for moving the digger around and also a little too small for me to drive - I need to stand up to find the clutch and brake pedals!
