when engageing reverse gear the tractor will reverse but it now tends to hop out of gear, is this a problem with the selector or is it the linkage, the year of the tractor is 98 and does not have a shuttle gear.
I've had this problem a couple of times. It is either the edges of the teeth on reverse gear worn away through grinding into gear
or
the weld cracked on the selector fork where it is welded onto the selector rod.
The first problem can be helped by welding up the slot on the selector rail, for the gear lock and grinding a new one a bit further along the rail - pushing it into gear a little bit further.
