Hello all
As the title suggests I just installed 4 new head gaskets and it's time to set the valve play. I know the clearance is 0.010-0.012 in. but I'm totally lost on how to do it. I have a feeler gauge but the sequence of setting things up eludes me. If someone has paperwork or can give me a detailed explanation it would be greatly appreciated. Gotta get the ol' girl back in the field.
Thanks in advance

Adjust valves 1&2 with 7&8 "on the rock"
Adjust valves 3&4 with 5&6 "on the rock"
Adjust valves 5&6 with 3&4 "on the rock"
Adjust valves 7&8 with 1&2 "on the rock"
Adjust to 0.25mm = 0.010" Thou

thanks for the quick response Al!
So to clarify, by 1&2, you mean the cylinder closest to the rad and work left to right? Also, this method allows you to do both valves per head at a time? Sorry, it's my first time doing this and I just want to get it right.
Thanks again

Can someone plaese make a bit more sense of this coz I want to set the play on my 57/11.When the exhaust valve is fully open can you set the intake valve on the same cylindert? Ands vice versa.
It,s a different method than what is described above but like the OP I don't really know much about it.
I changed the head gasket a month or 2 ago but there are some funny noises coming from the engine and I'm hoping it's the valve settings.
Thanks, Nikki

HI
You are better of doing it the way Alzet eksplains, eg adjust both valves on 1. cyl wen the rockers svihts on 4. cyl and so on. One esey way to tell what cylinder to adjust is to take of the pipes from the injektors to the pump and open the trotle full then turn the engine by hand till you se the pump skvirts and adjust the corespondig cylinder.

So When 1+2 injector squirts then go to 7+8 and jiggle the fly wheel back or forward a bit to get the gap on one valve,, adjust it and then jiggle it again to get the gap on the other valve to adjust it then?
That's what I've just done anyway I'll start her up now when this rain passes and see if she sounds any better.

Hi
Hven the no1 injektor skvirts and the rokers on no4 cyl shifts you adjust both valves on the no1 cyl and then you turn til no3 skvirts and adjust the no3cyl valves and so on.

Doh!
I should have adjusted the valves on the cylinder that "squirts" not the one that "rocks"!??? ::)
Fliping heck I'll do it again tommorow.
It still sounded wrong when I took it out after "fixing it"
Tough old machines these zetors!
Perhaps there could be a new section in the forum called "mechanics for idiots"!!
