Hi all,

My steering has developed a strange fault & I'm hoping that somebody can help me figure it out.

It is very heavy when turning left, but works fine when turning right.
Oil level is OK , and I have changed the valve at the end of the steering piston (behind the end plate ) for a known good used one , Also increasing the revs does not help.

Has anybody had this trouble before ?
Any ideas what the cause is ?

Thanks
Mark

These steering housings often caused trouble. Some people say it is because it was made in Poland, just like the other part with manufacturing defects in the Crystal range: the rear axle.
I wont advise you anything about it because i dont know, other than to ask a dealer who has experience with these.

Well I have had the same problem for several years now on a 7745. Exactly as you describe. I posted on here a few times about it hoping to get a solution, but did not have any luck.

Did all the obvious things, such as new ATF, filter, put new seal kit in the steering ram, checked everything out in the steering box etc. No improvement.

Two months ago we tackeled the main axel pivot pin and bushings. There was a fair bit of wear in the inside bushing, so we took out and replaced that. Now the steering has improved a fair bit but still inclined to be heavy at times going to the left.

Last week as a further test I completely removed the steering damper ram and discovered that the steering is much lighter in both directions left and right. The trouble is that when you get any bit of speed up on the road, the steerimg wobbles like crazy.

I need to re install the damper this week end. One thing I notice however, is thet with the damper removed from the tractor, I can fairly easily push close the ram. On the other hand however, it is almost impossible to manually open it again!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am beginning to suspect that the damper ram is the real culprit in the steering problem. That is to say it closes easy when I turn right, but when I need to turn left the damper malfunctions causing the power steering pump to spit out through the relief valve rather than open the ram!!!!!!!!!!!

Only way I could be sure is to borrow a known good damper ram and install in my tractor. I'm looking around for one at the minute.

Other option I am considering is adjusting the relief pressure in the power steering relief valve. Maybe that is dealing with a symptom as opposed to the root cause.

R
