Have recently got my project 8045 running and been going through all the components making sure everything works and everything besides 4wd seems to be working, I did take the cable off and had to free it up but I'm sure I put it back in the way it came out, it comes up about 10mm, I pulled it up and tried to reverse up a really steep bank but only the back wheels spin when it gets to steep.

Unsure if it worked properly before I bought it because the tractor had been sitting for 4 years

the lower wheels will have most weight and hence most grip ... try driving up frontwards and see if the front wheels spin

with 4x4s like landrovers we normally nudge them into a sturdy tree on wet grass to see if both axles spin.

That's why I drove up backwards, I thought is the most weight was on the front and the rear could no longer move the tractor back that the front would push it back more
