Engaging PTO

I have an 8540 and have recently put a new Tierre mulcher behind it. It works beautifully but I'm having difficulty engaging the PTO. On engaging the switch on the dash the mulcher nearly stalls the tractor until the mulcher gets up speed. Is there a way of avioding this situation? Can you feather in the engagement of the PTO? or am I not doing something in sequence? Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks Mike
