Hi again,

My 8011 has a pretty bad oil leak coming from the joint between the gearbox & the back of the bellhousing. It is back end oil that is leaking.

The leak seems to be worse when the tractor is not running. I have tried parking the tractor with the front end elevated but it still leaks.

Is there any chance that one of the pumps is leaking like this or is it more likely to be a seal in the gearbox ?

Also the torque multiplier is a little slow to change from low to high. Could this be related ?

Thanks.

Mark

The torque multiplier operates from another independent hydraulic pump inside the transmission. It turns at slow speeds and is very robust so is not likely to be a problem. Have you adjusted the band for the torque multiplier? As I recall there are three set screws around the outside of the transmission that position the band centered over its drum. You tighten these up then back them off a certain amount and I can not recall what that amount is. It might be 3/4 of a turn but not sure. After that adjustment is made, there is another adjusting screw that tightens the band up. I don't remember this procedure exactly and I no longer have service manuals for any of the Long tractors. It also is something like tighten it fully then back of 1 1/2 turns or something like that......better find out the right amount from someone that knows. That screw is on the end of the piston that actuates the band, behind a cover on the left side it seems. You need to look it up in a service manual. The point of all this explanation is if the band lining has worn a little, it is taking the piston farther to travel before it engages and thus the lag in time. If the band gets far enough out of adjustment too loose it could potentially let it slip in low side. I think even the operators manual may describe this adjustment procedure.

Also make sure the hydraulic screens are not plugged. That might also cause sluggish shifting of the hi-low multiplier. I can't remember if those suction screens are ahead of the transmission pump or not.

Dirty or too heavy oil would cause sluggish shifting. Blown o-rings in the clutch pack might also. That would not be a good thing.

All this is from a very poor memory and it was over 20 years ago so don't hold me to specifics. Also this is if the Crystal is the same machine as a Long 900, 910, 1100, 1110. They are the 4 cylinder versions with the 1100 and 1110 being turbocharged (turbo was put on in the US). The 6 cylinder version of the Long was a 1310.

Try taking the cover plates off either side of the clutch housing, you may have to remove the power steering pipe off the r/h one and replace it before starting the engine. Then shine a torch into the housing and see if you can find the leak. Unless its the input seal to the main pump which is only an o ring or a pump leak, the only other places it can leak from are the main shaft seals or the seal on the drive to the steering pump.
You will have to split the tractor to remedy the last two, but the main hyd pump can be removed through the l/h opening.
If your tractor has an assister ram there may be another small piston pump in the housing to the right, check this out as well.
On balance though, if it still leaks gear oil when parked, and I dont mean the bit that left in the clutch housing that will dribble a little for days, then I would checkout the main pump first because its the lowest place where oil can leak from when stopped and then only when the gearbox oil is full to the mark.

Just said I would post up what was the source of the leak in case anyone suffers the same problem.

I split the tractor & was fully convinced that it was the oil seal in the hollow shaft from the clutch.

It turned out that the gasket was leaking between the bellhousing & the gearbox.

The bolts on this joint weren't properly tightened. I continued with splitting anyway & replaced all the oil seals, checked the clutch & torque and replaced the damaged gasket with a new genuine item.

I am delighted to say that the leak is stopped. [smiley=happy3]
