Hi

Would be very grateful for a bit of help , my 6211 power steering has got stiff i changed the power steering pump but it made no difference, could it be the ram or associated parts, when i jacked the front up the steering was still much the same it seem to be stiffer when i steer to the right.

Is there oil in the steering gearbox itself ?

And what oil do you use? gear oil is too thick, it wont actuate the valve. ISO VG 21 is recommended but hard to get as it is a very thin hydraulic oil. ATF 2 (automatic transmission fluid) is an alternative, more expensive but you can get it at every gas station. Another advantage is that ATF maintains the same viscosity hot and cold, no stiff steering in winter.

Many thanks renze but i forgot to mention i replaced the power steering oil i replaced the pump as a mechanic told me that the pump was failing but steering no better, the steering is not very bad when the tractor is moving, there is also a bit of free play there too.

Once a broken pivot bearing caused the steering to be stiffer in one direction. When steering left, the ram would push on the crank, removing the radial load off the lower pivot bearing, while it gave additional load when you steered the other way...

But that was a 4wd, the 2wd has sliding bearings which would be less likely to get this effect.
