Howdy ZetorFolks,

The power steeering on my Crystal leaves a lot to be desired i.e. it takes a lot of effort to move the steeering especially when the tractor is stopped on bad ground.

I have cleaned the power steering filters on the side of the engine - the 20 or so circular disk filters. Oil level is also OK. I used SUTO (Super Universal Tractor Oil). Operating temperature does not much any difference.

After driving a friends MF 165 the other day, this was a revelation. The power steering was literrally a little finger job to turn compared to a two handed heave on the Crystal.

Any thoughts anyone?

Tom

YES !!!!

after a leak, i filled the power steering with 10w/30 universal farm oil.. That took a body builder to steer !!

The oil seller, a guy that visits farms in a Van, said that mostly ATF 2 was used.. So i tried ATF 2 (automatic transmission fluid, a red synthetic oil) and it made a HUUUge difference !!

I just unmounted the pump return line and let it "bleed to death" like when you slaughter a chicken... :p dont let that pump run dry for too long, to avoid damage by lack of lubrication. remove as much universal oil as you can, some combinations of red hydro oils and universal oils seem to "bite" each other and appear to foam, eat rubber parts or other chemical reactions.

Best luck, i'm sure you can operate it without getting tired.;)

Hello Tom ! Maybe i can help you. Perhaps you know how the steering is on the 6011 (1982. two-wheel drive). The oilvalve is operated by the steeringwheel. Not servo. I had a tractor who had a steeringwheel who was too heavy to use, so i had to do something about it. An mecanic did adjust the valve, and now i can blow on the steeringwheel and it turns by itself. Is it possible that you have an adjustable oilvalve like this on your Crystal ?

first try the oil... the ATF is extremely thin, teh 10w/30 too thick, the oil you described in earlier posts was even thicker...

I'm sure the oil change will be statisfying..

what pressure should the steering valve be set at. power assisted steering not working at all. checking steering valve and it is not blowing off. pump seems to be working, not sure about steering box at front. hope somebody can help . Thomas in Ireland.

hi thomas . the valve is on top of the power steering tank . i did turn this valve up using a pressure gauge .. i think the valve is metric thread .. i think it did not make the steering much lighter ...the front unit can be trouble sum.. i had a recon unit here only sold it a year ago on donedeal.. i had a quick look in manual no pressure setting .. they say to fit new valve.. and they say in the gear pump to reinstall the pump in the reverse way.. that might help , and use light oil and clean filter .. am thinking if you could get valve out of tank a bit with all the pipes on and run tractor you shud be able to see if its dumping into tank. if its not dumping into tank you no your problem does not lie there. becareful its all high pressure.. hope this help
