Lately I have noticed that the starter on my 6045 starts to run for no reason whilst the tractor motor is running. The tractor starts ok and the starter stops ok but after about 10 minutes of use the starter will start running of its own accord. I disconnected the start wire but it still keeps running until I tap the solenoid and then it releases and stops. I have removed the solenoid and checked the contacts, they are almost new. I polished them up anyway to see if that would fix it but it hasnt. I have removed the starter and checked the bendix in case it was sticking but all is good. I have done at least 50 dry runs on the bench and cant get it to stick. It seems to be the vibration of the engine running which sets it off. Has anyone else experienced this problem and found what it was ?

Matt, What was wrong with the solenoid? did you pull it apart ? My solenoid looks like new when I dismantled it ?? The contacts inside were in excellent condition.

Hi, i had this happen once on a Layland P76, the starter bench tested fine but would jam on when starting, it was the solinoid spring had become weak....... also check the little spring under under the moving contact plate.
also check for a short in the solinoid cap, between the main battery lead and the pull in winding on the solinoid, sometimes the gap between contacts or terminals is very small.

I think I would look for a wiring fault first, maybe a couple of wires rubbed through in the " birds nest" behind the dash, check the wires to and from the button.

Happened to me two days ago, shut the tractor off after a short run and the starter motor was whirring away. I had to disconnect the battery to get it to stop. I tapped the solenoid with a hammer and it's been working good since. Not very confidence inspiring though.
