The switch by the clutch pedal should have a leaf spring fitted underneath it's mounting that is struck by the clutch pedal tang to act as a safety switch so the starter can only be operated with the clutch pedal depressed. When the leaf spring breaks it falls onto the cab floor & the starter will not operate as a short term repair untill a new spring can be obtained the two wires can be joined together, this is what may have been done to your 4340
