Changing the Carraro Front-Wheel Planetary Reduction Housing Oil
I used: Ultra1Plus SAE 75W-90 Synthetic Gear Oil, API GL-4.
And for both sides it calls for: 1.3 qts (1.2 Liters) of oil.
1st I jacked up the front end of the tractor so that both front wheels are off the ground.
2nd Then I put the tractor out of 4WD, as it allows the front wheels to turn more easily.
3rd Chose to do the right side first and I placed a pan to catch the old gear oil under the front tire.
4th Using a 1/2 inch-drive-ratchet, removed the oil-plug and rotated the wheel down so that the old oil would exit the Planetary Housing.
5th Next rotate the wheel so that the oil hole is horizontal in the upright position so to be refill with the gear oil.
6th Using a funnel with a small hose attached to the small end of it, I filled the Planetary Housing to the proper oil level.
7th Next I reinstall the oil-plug and repeat this process to the left wheel Planetary side.
Notes: With the pictures you can view some of the process and there are some pics which I used
an endoscope-camera to view the inside of the Planetary Housing, where the Planetary gears look to be in very good shape.
The oil-plug-magnet did its job collecting the small metal debris from what looks to be normal wear over the past 25 years.
Also after cleaning the oil-plug, I did paint it Red, as there was still some red paint on them or maybe it is just the primer paint.
I think it looks good anyways.
