I just bought a used Zetor 5245 and need to know how to engage the PTO. It will rotate but is not engaged because I can stop it by hand with the tractor in neutral. Does the tractor need to be in a gear with clutch engaged for it to operate? Any help will be apprecated.

Hand clutch for PTO is the lever facing backwards on the handbrake mounting. Disengage when lifted.
Gearstick is the small lever on the left on the floor in the centre.
Starting at the bottom. ie. lever pushed right forewards, lever moves in approx 25mm stages which are detented.

  1. PTO off, hydraulic pump (engine speed dependent) switched on.
  2. PTO on and hydraulic pump (engine speed dependent) switched on.
  3. Neutral (PTO and Hydraulic off)
  4. Ground speed dependant PTO
(Attention - in reverse gear rotates backwards!)

PTO speed, not in pos 4 above ,altered by the central lever under the seat on the floor .
  • To the left : 540 upm PTO
  • Neutral, centre out of gear including hydraulkic pump
  • To the right : 1000 upm PTO

When it's in ground speed mode, if you put the low/high lever in neutral, then you can have 5 speeds and reverse using the main gearstick, useful for unblocking muckspreaders etc, but be warned, you can get around 1500 rpm + in 5th !!

Thanks Dave,

I just have one other question, when operating a rotary cutter off the PTO will the gearstick lever have to be in up position (ground speed dependant PTO) or can it work in the 2nd position (PTO and hyd pump)? Thanks again for your help .

Dale

I would use it in 2nd position (pto and hyd-pump)

I have a similar issue. But I could swear pulling the lever up was to engage the pto as it would grind and not engage. I have since adjusted the hand clutch lever. It appears to be engaged as it no longer grinds...but the pto and hydraulics still do not work.
