Hello, I have a 5340 that never ran right. I renewed the piston and rings, the liners, reconditioned the heads, had the pump and injectors checked and it will still not run right. It smokes but does not quite fire on pots 1/2 &4 but fires clean on 3.checked compression on all pots, 16.5 bar on all so good compression. Set the tappets to correct gap and all the timing marks on the cogs are in the right place. even tried a pump off a 7245, which are, I am told are very near the same engine but have the same results.
I would be most gratefull for anly help and pointers to solve this major headache. Thanks.

Have you checked the injectors ? including alignment marks !

I know it sounds a silly suggestion, but are the injector pipes going to the correct cylinders ?
If it fires on 4 then that should be the back pipe on the pump, so the front one should be #1 etc.
Dave

Alan thanks for your reply
The injectors have been over hauled and tested, but I did not know there was alignment marks?
could you explain please.

Dave, thanks for your reply.
Yes I have checked the firing order, the injectors pop off in the right pots on the firing stroke. As near as I can tell tdc give or take a degree or two.

There is a scribe line on the injector nozzle which should be in line with the scribe line on the injector body!

Hi,
Thought I'd add my fivepenneth to this. The compression figure you've stated is low in my opinion. I'd be looking for 20 plus with new parts. Which head gaskets did you fit ? Use the 1.2 mm's, they start better.
Have you checked the timing ? I've known the compressor/pump driveshaft to twist, which throws the timing out. Try swinging the pump fully one way on its slots and see how it runs.

Good luck
Mike

Thanks mike for your fivepenneth I think you might not be to far wrong. I checked the timing as best as I could with a marked rod down the injector hole and a clear pipe on the pump, a bit crude but effective and the diesel started moving at roughly 1mm to tdc with the pump pushed over to the engine fully and about 1-2mm after TDC pulled away from the engine. As far as the compression goes that is what the dealers said is right but I will query it with them again many thanks sam
