Have a Zetor 6178 will not engage 5 gear just get grating sound ,have taken top off gearbox and can see a gap between 5 gear and syncro metal and brass ring of a least quarter of an inch ,any ideas? Think this gearbox has been apart before by all the blue sealant every ware ,can not see any dedent spacers in syncro ,This tractor has a cab so do I need to remove to strip gearbox in place to repair?

been there, done that.

the circlip or Seeger ring went bust, holding the serrated ring on the input shaft on which the dog clutch engages.

You need to drain the gearbox oil, split between engine and transmission, take off front transmission cover, pull out PTO input shaft, take off the front upper transmission lid and the front lower transmission lid and pull the PTO gears off the shaft, push the PTO shaft back (if required take out the PTO shaft from the rear to make room)

one 540/1000rpm pto gear comes out the top, the other through the bottom hole. Then you can take out the transmission input shaft and change the 5 cent Seeger ring.

Thanks for information will give it a go

Dont know if you have done this type of work before, but if not, allways take your time to get the picture of what youre doing, and remember through which hatch you took what PTO gearwheel. (that is, IF your tractor has 540/1000rpm pto)

I think you take a top gear through the bottom hatch, before you can pull the shaft and take the bottom gear through the top hatch... Not sure its 10 years ago, but just think clear and you'll get it done.
