5211 steering assist and loader question....thanks

Machinery:
Zetor 5211 with Westendorf loader and BushHog 236 shredder. Due to a broken back, my equipment has been in my tractor shed for too long; however new parts are arriving and physical update help has started.
Hi Guys....I think the oil for my 5211 Front end loader comes from my Trans Gear Box....Does the oil for my steering assist also come from there, if not.....where is reservoir and what fluid does it use? I know this is a stupid question with a simple answer....but would appreciate your help . Thanks
 
Grumpy and Forterra....thanks guys, I appreciate your quick response. I think I have another problem as well; The 5211 tracks straight, but there is a lot of slack when I turn the steering wheel. From what I've read during a search on the forum....must need another steering box. Again.....many thanks and Happy Trails.
 
actually you can use universal oil or any oil with an anti frothing agent in it but hydraulic oil is the cheapest and what zetor use.

Zetor uses atf fluid and recommends it in their manuals !!!! every Zetor i have had has been delivered with atf fluid in the steering system.

And do you know the difference in viscosity between the two ??? 69):sneaky:

Anyways Donte, hydraulic or universal oil wont damage the system.. You just cant actuate the steering valve with this viscous oil so you'll have to rely solely on muscle to turn the wheels.

the clue is in the name transmission fluid as opposed to power steering fluid the latter just being hydraulic oil.you could certainly use atf but it is over kill.

yes i have used it on power steering,as for viscosity i wouldnt use ep 90.but then again i dont think a 5211 could pull a 15 ton dump trailer;)

 
ATF 2 is recommended. stick to that.

ATF is a good hydraulic fluid for the stering It is a multigrade viscosity ( iso 22/32 or if you prefer , SAE 10/20 ) He has a red color far easy fix a problem from an another fluid.
ATF is not totaly compatible with hydraulic fluid .
You must filling with same product if you need to add .
ATF is emulsifiant He can absorb water in a small % .
Hydraulic oil is not emulsifiant , Water go in the bottom of tank .
Hydraulic oil is good for powerstering but you have to totaly flush the system.
If you use Hydraulic , you must chose the correct viscosity
(iso 22 for cold winter or 32 in normal conditions.)
You can use multigrade viscosity .
The two fluids are approved by all the major brand hydraulic pump ( Abex Denisson Sperry Vicker etc.)
You are all right . Just do not mix .

Zetorcan & ricc.....thanks to you for the additional info. Grumpy, I don't look at it as a pissing contest, I see it as a lot of guys from many countries being helpful with what they feel is the best way to go. I haven't added any fluid to the p/s since I bought my tractor several months ago....so I don't know what it has in it now and hope I don't screw things up by mixing two different fluids. I compared the specs of the oils and heres a summarisation:

  • Is it technically correct to say that hydraulic oil can be used for the power steering of the 5211: yes, ISO 32 hydraulic oil, and ATF II D have the same viscosity at room temperature. The most widely used hydraulic oil, ISO 46, is already a bit viscous though. ATF however, has a better stability over a wide temperature range and is therefor the preferred choice to use year round.
  • Is it a good advice for the average operator to buy a hydraulic oil, which isnt suitable for the hydraulic system of his tractor, and chemically reacts with the oil which the tractor is filled with from the factory: No. :sneaky:

You cant use the same 10w/30 universal oil you use in the engine and transaxle/hydraulics, in the power steering. Telling people to "just" use hydraulic or universal oil, is incomplete and therefor misleading information, and will lead to problems (a non-functioning power steering system, or a chemical reaction with the factory filled oil)
On the other hand, when people DO find a shop that stocks hydraulic oil, and they throw it in the rear end because they dont know the distinction between universal oil and hydraulic oil, they WILL get expensive problems.

Zetor recommends to use ATF 2 because it is more readily available, and excludes the risk that an unwitting operator buys a barrel of hydraulic 46 for his power steering, and when the "hydraulics" of his loader begins to jerk, he tops up his rear end with hydraulic oil and he pays a high price for this mistake over time.
