Hi everyone, haven't been around lately, you might remember we had our tractor flooded back in January but I got it back and running good. We just had to redo the alternator and replace the starter motor from the water damage. but anyway that's not the problem. I want to fix the grinding gears during selection. This problem was apparent before the flood and even right after we had the clutch replaced, but we didn't worry too much at the time. Now we get everything else working so nicely, the grinding gear changes are getting annoying. This is what I can tell you. Newish clutch, little work, no slippage. The gears, any gears grate, we have to just hold the selector in until the grinding stops then there is no trouble to put it into gear, into any gear. We have the operators manual and have read the part about adjusting the engine clutch. We can't adjust the clutch we think unless we break the tractor, but we don't think this is the problem. We think it is the transmission brake that is not working. We adjusted the transmission brake lever on the clutch assembly as per the instructions in the manual, but the lever does not move the rod to the transmission brake. We think the transmission brake lever should move when the clutch is depressed and engage the transmission brake. When we loosen the adjustment nuts on the transmission brake lever so it is free to move and depress the clutch, it does indeed move with considerable force, so we don't think the problem is here. It almost seems like the other arm at the transmission is seized.
Can anybody say if they had a similar problem and how to fix it or what to look for?

As I said in the last post, the transmission brake lever moves when the adjustment nuts are loosened off, but I forgot to say that the direction of travel is forward, so it should pull on the rod that runs to the back of the transmission. That rod is mounted to a small arm at the back. I am thinking that it should pull this arm forward and activate the brake, is that correct? If I loosen the adjustment nuts again would it be ok to provide some leverage on the rear arm at the back and see if it can be freed up?

We figure if we can stop the transmission spinning by gently grinding the gear stick until they stop, the clutch isn't grabbing by much and if we get the brake working it should be able to do the job we currently do by the gear stick, is that right?

Hope somebody is reading this! I went out to the tractor again this afternoon and tried a few things. I undid the adjustment nuts on the transmission brake lever so the pull rod was free to move, then I went under the tractor and moved the arm at the back of the pullrod at the back of the transmission. I was easily able to move it backwards from the current position, but not forward from the current position so it looks like it is in the fully 'on' position to begin with. I left it in the fully back position (fully off?) and tightened the adjustment nuts. Then sure when I press on the clutch pedal, the transmission brake lever pulls on the pullrod and the arm comes forward. That part seems to work. Of course ther is no spring to return it back, it stays in the full forward positon. Does this mean we have worn away the brake and this is why it is not working? Should there be a spring to release the brake?
When I start the tractor, and don't release the cluch I can continue to select any gear, so it seems the clutch is not grabbing enough to start spinning the lay shaft at all. But it is confusing that when I release the clutch in neutral and then immediately disengage it that no matter how long I wait, the gears always grind (lay shaft does not stop spinning) which suggest the clutch is not disengageing fully. THis is so confusing!

I had a bit of a test of something and it seems to help . When I bring the tractor to a halt, I release the clutch a little til the engine just labours a little while I hold the brakes on then press the clutch completely. Nine times out of ten then there is no grinding. If I am right in my understanding what I am doing is stopping the lay shaft on the braked transmission.
