5245 RUNNING ROUGH WHEN COLD.

Hi all,
Please can anyone let me know what the proper procedure for adjusting the tappets on a 5245 engine. It has had new pistons and liners fitted but it runs rough when cold with alot of white smoke untill warm and i have had different ways told to me to adjust tappets. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
