After a winter stood our faithfull 6718 has a clutch problem and won't go into gear when the engine is running and the pto won't engage. The pto lever is very clunky even when the engine switched off.
It'll go into gear when the engine is switched off.
Had forgotten about the little oiler hole in the clutch inspection plate which was gunked up solid. Cleaned this off but wasn't sure how much oil this needed?
Turned the flywheel and one of the fingers is very loose. Looked at some photos elsewhere and think the spring is missing that goes under the finger?
Can a new one be fitted without splitting the tractor or does it need a new clutch assembly fitting.?
I'm guessing a broken spring lurking in the housing isn't a good thing, so will it have to be split to retrieve this ?
Thanks in advance !

its not uncommon for clutch plates to stick to flywheels during a winter of inactivity.

they can be freed , transmission clutch, by starting with it in bottom gear , drive up to something like a sturdy tree , depress clutch pedal as you hit (gently nudge) the tree and the cluch plate should free up, unless the wheels spin .
pto can be done by starting with a rotavator on the back , drop the spinning rotor on the ground with the pto clutch lever
in the dissengaged position and foot on the brakes.
all the above at minimum engine revs.

all asuming theres nothing actually broken in the clutches

Thanks Ricc!

Tried that to no avail. Had the inspection plate off again after looking at the photo of a clutch plate.
From what I can see there are six fingers or levers, 3 of one type with a small dome near the adjusting bolt end and 3 of the other ones that are shorter. Looking at the spares available online, the longer levers appear to operate the main clutch, and the shorter ones the PTO clutch????
All three of the longer levers are slack and have no tension in them? So I'm guessing that isn't good at all :(
Not sure what to do next really as it looks like this isn't a quick or easy repair and the engine will have to be split.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

HI
Check the small "domes" caled butrescaps, thei somtimes brake and gives the symtomes you diskribe. As for the pto check the linckighs maybe a pin is droped out. There is olso the chanse of a brocen relesebearing.

sounds like youll be splitting the tractor.

not that difficult on a smallish tractor, you need a flat concrete area and some sort of rolling jack. just take your time.

ive seen a mechanic who knew what he was doing do a crystal clutch in a morning so it needent take too long.

the old nuffields and leylands were easier the top of the cluch housing would lift off and the cluch just lift out.
