7711-cooling system - please help

Hi all- very informative site and I thank you - but I can't find any info related to our problem..
Our 7711 was overheating so we changed the gage indicating temperature - problem wasn't there - then changed the thermostat - didn't help - yesterday we changed the water pump - cleaned and refilled the radiator but it's still overheating - the preston/water in the radiator is cool and the casing for the thermostat is boiling hot and the heat gage indicates overheating; the top of the motor is hot too - does anyone have any suggestions - could there be something that were missing ... we only filled the radiator - on the top of the water pump there is a screw that looks like a "bleeding screw" or one that unscrews to add liquid - were we supposed to do something with that - as you can tell not very experienced with tractor mechanics but quick learners!

Hi Maureen

The bung on top of the water pump is probably the outlet for a heater so ignore it.
Try running the tractor without a thermostat. It sounds like the new thermostat is sticking although unlikely. If you take the bottom hose off the radiator, does the water flow through the rad quickly ?. I 'm just wondering if it is blocked internally. Make sure it is very clean externally also if you have the close finned type.
Try that lot and let us know how it goes.

If, after you have done as Mike suggested , it runs cool without a thermostat then drill a very small hole in the outer rim of the thermostat to allow a very little water to circulate and let out any air. The smallest you can-1mm or 1/16" . Sometimes the water can't circulate because the thermostat won't let water past it until it's hot, can be a problem when the 'stat is in the hose away from the engine. Is very bad for the engine if it opens suddenly and floods the block with cold water. I have known an old IH W9 engine crack because of this.

A huge thankyou... we removed the thermostat and all appears to be ok - we haven't had a chance to really work the tracter because of severe thunderstorms in our area (again this evening) ... so the problem appears to have benn the thermostat all along - lets say I'm a little put out with the dealer who sold us the gauge then the pump when all along it was the thermostat he sold us first..... hmmmm
we didn't drill the hole yet but I guess we'll have to do that or go back to the dealer with the thermostat --- anyone know of someone reliable in my area - Quebec Canada (Laurentian area)
