New proud owner of 1997 8540....but she is not the easiest cold starter. Any tips on improving this...I know I can isolate the hydraulic pump off, but other than that what else-( No thermostart button as in manual .)
Also have an older zetor 5711?? and that starts ever so easy with just a car battery.

Does it have glow plugs fitted close by the injectors? if so replace all four as they tend to burn out causing poor starting.

im looking for old tractors. would you like to sell your 5711? king regards, my mob 07871508528

No glow plugs, no tractors for sale! Thermostart? assumedly there is provision in colder climes for Zetors of this type to effectively cold start?

UR3 engines have glow plugs for very cold weather. But should start easily up to -10C
check for fuel leaks (air getting in the fuel needs a lot of engine cranking before the bubbles are out of the fuel so the injectors can create a good mist of fuel) or the automatic cold start device.

My apologies you're both right it does have glow plugs, have just taken one off to get replacement set. Assumedly they come on automatically with ignition switch regardless of air temperature? Their does not seem to be an indicator light for pre- heat plugs on dash. Are these glow plugs pattern zetor specific or more widely used?
Apologies I'm new to more modern Zetors! What does my operator book mean when it talks of "theremostart button" which appears absent from lower dash board, also this tractor seems to have a stop cable that is superfluous as stop seems to be by shutting throttle right down. Doubtless it will all become clear in a week or two of use.

You're right about coming on automatically, but there should be a yellow/orange warning light on dash to tell you when to start the engine. It is all controlled by a timer relay in the front of the tractor above the battery. There is also a fuse beside it.
Mike
