hi my 4718 is burning oil on one cylinder. its the one nearest the radiator. Took off the manifold and it is clear to see that the oil is comming from this cylinder its 'heathy ;)'exhaust smoke from the other two cylinders. the oil level is a a good bit higher than it should be and needs to be drained off. would the high oil level cause this or am a looking at an engine rebuild??
thank you in advance
paddy.

You're looking at a new head gasket for cylinder #1

Take off the manifolds, and #1 head. After scraping the old gasket with a blade, remove the remains, and clean the surfaces with sandpaper.
Its very unlikely that these single cylinder heads warp, but check it for flatness with something really straight, such as a ruler.
Then torque the heads back to 170-180 kgf and put the rest of the stuff back.

I am still looking for the torque settings of the M14 studs of my 3011. The torque settings of the later ones with 100 and 102mm bore and M16 studs, is 170-180 kgf

The high oil level is most likely caused by the head gasket, leaking water into your oil pan, and also leaking oil into the combustion chamber, causing the smoke.

Hi Paddy

If you aren't working the tractor very hard, you may find that is why she is smoking. They like some hard work now and then to keep them cleared out. It's quite common to get oil dribbling down from the exhaust gaskets on light work. How high is the oil level and is the oil still nice and black? Just wondering if it has diesel in it or whether you've overfilled it. High oil level may cause smoke.

The symptoms you are describing points to a faulty injector on that cylinder. Remove No1 injector & test you will find it does not spray or "crack off" as it should but just "hoses" sending unburnt fuel into the sump & exhaust manifold. Giving you the symptoms you describe!

thanks to all, the tractor is never worked hard and is only used for light work. The oil comes out at more than a dribble though. I Have already done 2 head gaskets so I presume I should have bit the bullet at the time an got that one skimmed as well!!!. I will have the Injector cheacked out in the mean time. is there a way of testing this myself by turning the in jector outside the engine and watching the spray or would this prove inaccurate. what does the oil look like after diesel mixes with it?
Thanks again for the help .

Hi

Oil with diesel in it will still be black but very diluted and thin. You can turn the injector outside the engine but DO NOT TOUCH THE TIP WHEN YOU'RE TRYING IT. Fuel injected at 160 atmospheres will penetrate the skin, enter the blood system and kill !!! Be very careful.

Thats how i check them... rotate the fuel line and injector, mostly you can accomodate them so it sprays in the open without bending the fuel line. It should spray cones of mist.

hi there just a quick update it is the injector giving touble. an as ye said the oil has become thiner. and it is hoseing out diesel.
how is the diesel making its way in to the oil though? is it that it is just seeping past the rings?

Hi
just finished college so it time to get this finished!!!!......I filled the injector pump with oil an when i drained it off it was white oil that came out!
What would this be is it just condensation or is it a bigger problem?
Thanks
Paddy
