5245 is very hard cranking. Tried two batteries, but both are used for a year to start it without a working alternator, which means start untill depletion and then charge them with a 220V charger. So they might both be busted.

Whats the voltage drop of a good battery, between no load, and when the starter button is pushed ? I measured 12.8 volt yesterday after 3 days of charging, but my brother left the ignition key on so 12V this morning with no load, .5 V when cranking.

I need to know the Volt measures for a healthy battery and how to check if the battery is busted, or just depleted.

Hi Renze

A rough figure when cranking the engine would 9 volts.
If you haven't got a heavy discharge tester, look in the cells when you are cranking the engine to see if one is fizzing like lemonade !! There should be no bubbles, any fizzing means a faulty cell.

Other thing is ur Terminals from the battery and at the Starter, make sure they are clean from rust and corrosion, Emmery paper is good for cleaning them and boiling hot water is the best thing for removing the powdery corrosion stuff.
If ur battery has been low for a long time and u've been using that battery to start ur machine there is a good chance u'll weakin and burn out the field coils in-side the starter, this will result in the starter being lazy no matter wot state ur battery is in.

I got it all sorted out:

It didnt start on its heavy 175Ah Scania battery i got for free. Charging it didnt help , so i tried a spare battery, a small gel-type with increased starting amps. That one was even worse. Charging both batteries didnt help, so i suspected them both bad.

After looking at everything, i found that:

- Scania battery was fresh but depleted
- gel type battery was busted: it gave only 5 volts
- battery charger was busted: it gave only 10.5 volts

I threw the charger in the scrapbin and borrowed my neighbours charger (which puts out over 15 volt: i didnt leave the battery hooked onto it because i was afraid of toasting it !) The Scania battery, once charged, puts out a steady 11 volt when cranking.
I put on a brand new Magneton alternator and it puts out 14.5 volt at 1000 engine rpm.

So all my starting problems are solved: The unexpected malfunctioning of the battery charger got me puzzled for a while... ;)
