Development started in 1964 at
Zetor Brno. some polish engineers were stationed in Brno too. Universal (UTB ) got to build the front axles, Ursus got to build the rear axles, Zetor the engine and transmission. In 1981 the production was moved to ZTS Tees in Martin due to an international treaty about the reduction of arms production: ZTS built the T-72 tank in license from the russians, which suddenly became a slow market leading to unemployment.
To bring employment to that region, they moved the UR2 production there. Povaszke Strojarne then got to build the transmissions, a company that was later owned by HTC before they bought Zetor. They just discontinued this company, perhaps moved the production machines to Zetor ?
Anyways, when ZTS started doing their own modifications, the quality went down the drain. brittle rear axle castings, poor gearbox bearings, they cut costs on anything to stay in the race but it was too late for them. They went broke shortly after the Zetor takeover by HTC, but i guess HTC didnt find anything worthwhile there, as the UR3 was basic ally a Crystal equivalent. The UR2 rear end with its 16 speed was becoming dated, while the rear end was too light for 160hp (and in practice often tuned to 200) ever from the start.
