I started my 3511 the other day, no problem starting but terrible noise started in it, a banging deafening sound. She then started to lose power and increased smoke output & halted.Has my engine died ?, i am not very mechanically minded, maybe some one out there could assist me, can she be revived ?

it may have dropped a valve but if it kept running and then stopped doubtful! sounds more like the bottom end conrod may have started coming loose from the crank! can you still start her?? may be something quite simple but who nows!

She would have kept turning over until i went to move here. I had a problem a month ago, the pulley had come off the crank. The nut had come loose on the crank, i used loctite to hold the nut on.Could it be that the bottom pulley may not be tight enough. When i go to start her, she turns over fully but wont engage, what do you reckon ? thanks

If the front pulley has come loose there is a possibility that the timing gear on the crankshaft has come loose & sheared the key by your description of how the engine last ran this is the most likely cause of your dead engine!

I finally got round to stripping down al to get at the pulley.I got second hand crankshaft nut and lock key for tightening on the pulley.reassembled all and she is starting again. However that terrible noise is still in it and there is an awful lot of smoke coming from the engine. Can somebody tell me what the problem might be, can it be fixed ? thanks

you should have taken the front timing cover off while you were there. to see if something is loose inside! i would seriously look if i wer you:sneaky:

forgive my ignorance, but is the front timing cover behind the crankshaft pulley ?

yes the aluminium front cover of the engine. you must remove the crank pulley and im not sure if the front axle has to be removed aswell. once removed you can see the timing workings etc. like i said before you may have a conrod loose which is causing this noise. this may account for the smoke because the piston is not doing its stroke properly:sneaky: but if you remove the front timing cover watch the crank seal which is in the cover! (its a good idea to replace this)

all the best matthew

Got her going again Mathew, it was a circlip that split on the rocker and ended up bending a conrod/ push rod.A fair bit of white smoke now, what do you think causing that ?

you have put all the rocker shaft back right??? i mean you put the new circlip on? and you put a new push rod in? maybe your valve clearances are all wrong!

still if their is no odd noises and she goes good itll be ok

all the best matthew
