I have a Lely Optimo 240 mower and per the manual Esso EHL 484 x C grease. I have searched the internet and cannot find this type of grease. My local Lely dealer has sold me the recommended grease but to me its extremely thick. Normally I use a 80-90 gear oil on other gear boxes. My questions are: 1. Has anyone heard of the Esso grease? 2. Will the 80-90 gear oil work in my gear box without any damage?

Any info will be appreciated.

This is definitely one of the best kept secrets! When I googled "Esso EHL 484 x C grease" you get some references from - Lely!

EP is Extreme Pressure grease - maybe EHL is Extreme High Loading (my guess).

These greases contain solid lubricants, usually graphite and/or molybdenum disulfide, to provide protection under heavy loadings. The solid lubricants bond to the surface of the metal, and prevent metal-to-metal contact and the resulting friction and wear when the lubricant film gets too thin.

Sounds like a special purpose grease for a high shear load application so I think you would be best to stick with it.
