I set about replacing the injector nozzles. The middle injector valve came out alright but the bottom half of the other two remain in the cylinder head (they unscrewed apart leaving the bottom in it).Do i have to take off the cylinder head to get at the nozzles in the valve(tightening nut) ? or is there some other way

WOW

hold your horses

your saying your injector nozzles are still in the head?? the injector should have come out as 1 whole unit you remove the pipe and the clamp holding it in and pry it out with a bar.

they should not have unscrewed.

Thanks Matt,
The middle one came out as a complete unit and the other two unscrewed apart leaving the bottom ends in the head. Took off the heads and pushed the ends back up, sorted now. I guess they were never touched before and after 35 years in it they became seized. I will replace the pistons and liners while i am in this far, any advice/tips on replacing these ?

i have only re ringed my 3545. how much of a lip is on the liners on the top? you can feel where the 1st ring stops at the top of the liner. if not to bad dont bother changing them just hone them out like i did. i put new rings and 1 new piston i found 1 had damage on it.

How can you tell if the piston rings / liners need replacing.Would they have to be taken out comletely to examine them. Also is there an oil seal that should go on the engine pulley/crankshaft ?

really you should compression test but it makes sense to change rings if the engine is apart. to examine the liners just run your finger nail up and dwon the 1st piece of the liner usually you can see the lip about 1/2" down or so can you do a picture?

crankseal on the front: remove the pulley and go from there.
