Hi all newbee here just taken delivery of a 5748 but on the axel it has cast 5745 does that mean it's a 5745..?it was ment to be in working order but all the throttle linkages were seized up. free it all up an had to put water and oil in as none in there bit of a worry. Even the starter was reluctant to do the job so had to short it first.with jump leads got her to fire up. runs a bit lumpy and yep water in the oil. Fantastic. Is this just head gasgit or could it be more..

A 5745 and a 5748 are the same tractor only the 5748 had a cab, so it saying 5745 on the axle is because it is the same axle used on both models. Zetor was always good at fitting as many same parts to as many models as possible. So is there a cab on it? that series has individual cylinder heads so might only have one gasket that's gone.

Possible reasons for water in oil
1.Leaking head gasket This allows contamination between the sections of the engine. The most likely cause of a leaking head gasket is from over heating.
2.Cracks in the cylinder head or block From overheating or frost damage.
3.Failure of seal around bottom of wet liner Incorrect coolant mixture.
4.Corrosion of wet liner / porous block Coolant without corrosion inhibitors added increases sludge formation, which is not only corrosive but also abrasive. This can eventually pierce the cylinder wall.
5.Heat exchanger failure Many engines are fitted with water to oil heat exchangers which can leak fluids between the systems. This can also cause oil to enter the coolant system.
6.Exhaust pipe Uncovered vertical exhaust pipes on tractors that have been left outside in the rain will eventually fill up with water, a scenario all too common with old tractors left to decay in farm yards.

Thanks DIY.. it's got a cab so it is a 5748 then. I new that with the 11 and 18.. When it arrived and I checked the oil there was nothing on the stick so put some oil in. Shes not got a cover on the exhaust. She came from Scotland on one of the islands. And was brought to the mainland about three years ago. The side window was missing so all that Scottish rain and sea salt has got in. So do you think it could just be rain going down the exhaust over the years she's been sitting. I'll take the sump plug out tomorrow drain and put some more oil in fingers crossed... There is a small hole in the exhaust bend is that not there for that reason.. Ive also got a 6748 she came from Wales All works well but the cab is a lot worse rusted all the way through the frame thats that Welsh cow muck for ya

Be nice if it was. Am I that lucky. . The engine starts up OK now but does rev up then slows nearly dies but then revs up again runs like that. Does that mean it's a diafram in the pump like in a fordson major.its not vacume run though so can't be any ideas.. Nice easy fix please..

If the engine is running irregularly, it's not getting diesel evenly enough so you should start first change the filters and clean the glass bowl, then check the hole in the diesel cap not blocked. You could change the diesel that there's not water or dirt in it, check the hand pump not worn letting in air and of course the injector pump could be worn or the nozzles might need cleaning or changing.

There should be no holes in the exhaust pipe or manifold.

Thanks again. Ill get ordering some filters. Ihave the same hole in the bend on the 6748 these must be drilled by previous owners then

The governor in the injector pump could be worn if still running uneven then you will need to bring it to a diesel engineers to have it reconditioned.

The hand pump when I bleed it does eject lots of diesel from around the shaft is that normal. prohaps that indicates blocked filters like you said as the pumped diesel can't get to where it should and comes out the weakest place..

Thanks again DIY farmer for all of you help and advice. What's a 5748 with knackard engine. Bodged up axel King pin repair missing glass and drawbar + smashed up door. Worth... less than I'm ment to be paying the chap I got it off. It was in good working order according to his advert..

Diesel coming out around the shaft would not be a good sign, it should come out when you open the bleed screw on the top of the filters after you change them.

Here in Ireland a 5748 would be very rare and people would be always looking out for the 4wd parts.
