No drive on right rear wheel

Hi all

Recently took the Zetor 5011 out and I started slipping on the hills. I realized the rear left wheel wasn't turning and the right one was digging a hole in the ground.

The left seams to turn under high Revs (digs the ground a little on quick takeoff) but nowhere near as much as the opposite wheel.

It would seem I've a one wheel drive tractor, not the 2WD it should be.

Any ideas? I'm a bit basic when it comes to things mechanical.

Any ideas how to 'easily' check if the foot brake is dragging?

The hand brake "band" is OK on both sides, so it would appear not to be that.

Your tractor is 2wd and it is equipped with a differential gear set in the transmission that allows the rear wheels to turn at different speed such as when you are going around a turn. When the tractor is pulling hard or it is slippery and one wheel loses traction the wheel with the least traction will spin.

Your tractor should have a differentail lock which is activated by a foot pedal near your right heel. You use it when your tractor is spinning and it will lock the differentional so that both wheels will spin together.

Sorry, no pedal.

It would have been an easy fix but unfortunatly I can't see any pedal, lever or button in this vacinity. Can't find anything about it in the owners manual either.

Looked again, harder this time...Nope no pedal, but found a hole that goes through the floor and I expect that this should have a rod through it that connects to the unattached push rod which enters into the rear hub.

I'll see if I can get it working (looks unused for some time and rusted!). If I run into troubles I'll post again.

do you need your diff lock? ie are you getting the tractor stuck?

you cannot drive the tractor with the diff lock on all the time. for a start it wont turn, or if it does it will make a mess - the back wheels are pushing the tractor straight forwards and dont want it to do anything else.

i have only ever used my diff lock a few times when pulling big lorries out of mud.

The fact its only spinning on one wheel is preety normal. the fact that it is ALWAYS the right, however - is not. Either you have as someone else said a dragging brake on your left wheel (meaning its easier to put power through the right) or maybe you just have a worse tyre with less grip on the right? I cant really see anything else that could cause it, assuming both wheels are on the same surface.

if you ARE getting stuck and you dont have a diff lock, an old trick is to put the brake on hard on the wheel that is spinning - this will mean the wheel with more traction will take the power and hopefully pull you through some of the sticky stuff.

Modern cars do that electronically- braking a spinning wheel so the power can be transferred by the other wheel.

When the going gets really tough, there's nothing better than a diff lock though...
