hey

could anyone please tell me what type of oil to put in the back end (gear box) of a 1979 zetor crystal

any help would be appresiated

thanks

steven

80w/90 gear oil also works. It is about the same viscosity, just measured at a lower temperature so the measurement is higher.

I use 10w/30 multifarm, very like 15w/40 STOU
Both these multi purpose oils are a bit better for the joint gearcase/hydraulic oil storage. 80w/90 is "just" a gear oil where the multipurpose oils have better hydraulic characteristics

You will find that you have more trouble with the main hydraulic pump and the T/A pump not priming after the tractor has been left standing if you use the straight gear oil. I dont know why, maybe because its thicker when its cold. Otherwise I agree with Renze

case ih hy-tran ultra ,or mc cormick htx is very good oil for gear and hydraulick.

Tom,
Its the hydraulic pump in the front of the gearbox that works the Hi-Lo, PTO and 4W/D.
The one you can't get out without splitting the tractor in 2 places ( I'd be overjoyed if someone could explain how to do it without all that work as I have one that needs changing !)
