Hi Folks - it's been a while!

Well it looks like the time has come for me to change the piston rings on my '78 6945.

I was out ploughing yesterday and had to keep one door and the rear window open otherwise the cab was filling up with blue smoke from the crankcase breather :(

From the manual it looks like a fairly straightforward job - is there anything I should know though before starting work? Am I likely to need anthing other than a set of rings and head and sump gaskets?

Any other pointers, or anything else I should bear in mind? The engine has about 5300 hours if the clock can be believed.

Many thanks

Hi There,

Just so you know I can supply you with those rings should you need them

Ferrid@aol.com

Thanks

J-P,

Hmmm...5300 hrs should not be a problem. Might have gone round twice or three times??

If your tractor has been lightly stressed i.e. a lot of work on tickover or very low revs she might need a good workout e.g. rotavating.

Good luck,

p.s. How is the new arrival?

Tom

Thanks Dominic, TomZ

I'm not sure, but I think I can get the rings locally - but let's see. Thanks for the offer anyway :)

Could the clock have gone two or three times round? Maybe four even! I can tell that it has had a lot of hard use over the years, but I don't have the experience to be able to estimate hours :(

Actually the tractor was smoking a LOT less yesterday than it was the day before. Before that I hadn't used it in a few weeks.
Apart from the experience of the last two days, I haven't found that giving the tractor hard work helps. If I'm doing something heavy, like dragging a spring tyne harrow deeply, the engine just runs hotter and more oil escapes through the breather. I haven't updated the breather or added a second one yet - I have a PET fizzy drink bottle tied on to the breather with electric fence wire to act as a separator. Once or twice a day I stop and pour what has collected back into the engine ;)

Oh and the little one is fine thanks Tom. :D Getting less little all the time!

J-P
