Greetings All, Getting to know my 4340 and sorting out problems from tractor being idle for at least two years. So far I have repaired the foot brakes, changed oils, replaced trans oil and repaired the starter circuit, etc. When I finally hooked up a 10 Ft. finishing mower I was pleased with the results. The problem is that the PTO disengages in use after a few minutes. To engage the PTO, I lifted he PTO hand clutch but it still grinds. Eureka! I have found it!!!!! The PTO hand clutch is disconnected!!??? One picture in the operators manual shows the PTO Lever being on the left closest to the seat. After adjusting the free play on that lever I found it was the hand brake! The outer lever (the one nearest the left fender) was the PTO lever and was disconnected. Now, my question is has the PTO system been damaged or will it sort itself out with a new lever and cable installed and properly adjusted, that is, does lifting the PTO lever to engage the PTO somehow lock in the PTO? Thanks, Nick

please explain yourself ???????

Nick, I think you may have your levers mixed up on the left side of the seat. The outer most lever nearer the fender is the parking brake. The inner most lever nearer the seat is the PTO shaft clutch disengagement. To ingage the PTO you need to pull up on the inside lever which brakes the PTO. Then engage the PTO which is on the left side on the floor between you feet. My 4340 has two levers on the floor the one on the left is for your PTO and Hydraulics (on the windshield you may have a sticker that shows you where to position the lever for live PTO or Ground PTO) the one on the right is for high and low range for the transmission. I hope this was not way of base. Let me know.

Frank

I forget one thing, do not leave the hand clutch disengaged more than 5 minutes. To disengage the PTO shaft for longer periods move your PTO selection lever to neutral.

Thanks Framk for the response. No, I spent all day with the 4340 and installed a new PTO cutch cable. On my 4340, the left most lever operates the PTO (Yellow Handle with one indent notch). The red handle with multiple teeth operate the hand brake - go figure!!!!! The PTO hand lever is now working but I believe it still disengages i.e. pops out to neutral. Now my manual states there is a heavier indent spring available and I will try that but I think I will go the final route and look at the PTO output shaft per the repair manual. Thanks again! Nick

Sounds like you are on the right track. I know how frustrating it can be when are not working properly. Good Luck!
