I've just got an old Twose back actor digger that I intend to use for ditching on my new 25 acres of marsh. i.e. no heavy digging it's all peat & soft clay. It runs from tractor hydraulics (no pump or tank) & probably weighs around 1/2 - 3/4 ton. Good length on the dipper & boom which look to be standard 4inch box sections.

Only problem is I don't have a tractor yet ! Wife thinks I'm mad, but all in good time... I'm fancying one of the lighter Zetors like a 3045 or 3545 due to the boggy nature of the ground.

Would a 3045 or 3545 be enough machine to run this digger? Its currently on an universal back axle mount, but I reckon changing it to a 3 point mount would be better? I notice a modern Mcconnel backactor needs 22 litres/min so I suppose the smaller Twose would be less? Would the Zetor hydraulics be sufficient to run it.

Would a 3045/3545 cope with cutting rushes? I can get a contractor to flail them down (haven't been touched for 10 years but we did 12 acres this year), so I 'd just then need to cut them with my own machine once or twice a year - any recommendations?

probobaly i cant see why not:D my 3545 before with its previous owner was on a BIG block cutter which needed hydraulic power and it handled it fine. where are you from in west wales. i live in llangrannog:D

I really would not recomend a 3545 for driving over rough ground especialy if there are tree stumps, ant hills or similar (even though i have one, and use it for this:-x)
So far I have managed to destroy a 4wd-dropbox, Knock a propshaft clean off the axle, knocked a hole in the front axle diff cover, destroy a few seals with rushes wrapping around them, snap a gearbox selector and many other things!
Its really good at it though, It can go anywere.
The hydraulic capacity is ok around 14-15litre/min (I guess)

I think a 3545/3045 will be good for a small place like yours though.

buy a 3545 or a 5545. but the 3545 i have done everything i asked it to;)

Matthew,
I'm not as far west as you - I live near Pontarddulais. I've now got 25 acres of dead flat marsh (not a stone onm the place so the diff should be safe) plus 2 1/2 acres of sloping fields, which we've had for a while.
There's over 2500 yards of wide drains saparating the fields of the marsh, of which I cleared about half with a contractor this first year, but there's lots of bits I need to do with the digger, as well as getting the rushes under control so we can actually run some stock apart from snipe there!!
I'll keep looking for a 3545 ideally though the 5545 may be easier to find, tho@ probably a bit heavy for the ground - anyone used double wheels on Zetors?

have seen a 5545 been used with double wheels.there is a 3545 and 2 3045 for sale on ebay i you are prepared to go and get them;)
