Starting problem.

Does anyone know why my 1982 7045 won't start?

When I press the start button all I get is a large click sound as if a contact is made then broken immediately. I can't really find where the click is coming from but I fear it may be the solenoid?

Anyone have any suggestions what to check?

I guess there could be a number of reasons.

Is the battery well charged. I take it that you are pushing the clutch right down to activate the switch allowing the current to get to the solenoid..
Any other noises like the starter motor beginning to turn.

You can short the positive lead at the starter motor over to the solenoid using a screwdriver or a spanner to see if the solenoid and starter can be activated.. Also being along side of the starter when doing this you will hear things well. This bypasses the clutch switch.

Holding or attaching a multimeter across the 12Volt sypply will give you an idea if the voltage is dropping low. If the battery is getting pas it, or low on charge then that may be the reason all other things being OK.

If it is a jammed starter then loosen the mounting bolts and have a look. Do tighten them up snug before applying the power again though.

the battery is fully loaded and the clutch is all the way in, so I guess it is either the clutch switch or the solenoid. I will try you suggestion later when I get home and see if I can bypass the clutch switch.

the click will be the starter solenoid.... forget the clutch switch, starter wouldnt click if that was gone.
first thing to check is that the connections in the battery to starter leads are clean and tight dont forget the earth lead, if the leads and battery are good the fault is probably either the contacts in the starter solenoid are corroded or the brushes in the motor not clean and free in their guides. its easy enough to remove the cover on the end of the starter to get at the brushes. but the solenoid is a bit more difficult to do, needs a soldering iron to release the coil wires to get the end off. it can be done but is a bit fiddely

but if this problem has just started with the onset of cold weather id check the battery first off , either by fitting a known good battery or by trying jump leads off another vehicle

charged the battery for 2 days but will try with the jump leads.

Problem now is my tractor wont stop starting! as soon as I turn on the power switch inside the cab, the starter starts turning over and does not stop, even without the key in or the clutch pressed, it keeps turning over, the engine started and it did not dis-engage even when the engine is running.

is this the ignition switch? or ?

if its the ignition switch pull off the small signal wire to the little terminal on the solenoid. if starter still runs its stuck contacts in the power side of the solenoid... basically a metal bar accross the base of the two big terminals.
there are usually complete starters available on ebay, think ive seen ignition switches on there aswell

ok removed the wire but it still kept turning over, so put my old solenoid in as I thought it would be ok as I had to renew battery. But the original problem came back with the clicking. So I am going back out to replace the solenid with the new one.
Any other ideas of what is wrong with this thing.

If you actually take one of these apart, some you can, some you cant, you will find that the contacts are made of steel which goes rusty and doesn't contact properly. we have covered these with a layer of braze and have had no more trouble. The contacts are on the back of the 2 bolts on the end of the solenoid.

the one i took apart involved unsoldering the coil wires fro the terninal tags before the plastic end would come off... and rethreading the wires through the holes and resoldering to get it back on..... fiddly but possible....

thanks for the tips guys, but it's new so no need to strip it down, will just ask for a replacement.
