Wiring Short??

My 4340 has the round, toothless key with a push button ignition switch. Went to start it today, after having used it 2 hours earlier, and the battery was dead. But I saw that when I inserted the key, the tachometer would jump to 2000 RPM, sometime staying there, sometimes falling back to zero. I also heard a click as the key is inserted or removed, and the clicking comes from overhead, near the heater/air conditioner controls. The blower and A/C are both off, so there shouldn't be a relay clicking, but that is what it sounds like. I looked at the wiring under the console, but saw nothing apparently wrong. Where would be a good place to start looking, using the clues I have given? Thanks!

My first thought is - is the battery flat ? or do you have a bad connection ? Check the earth connection under the cab. Check the connections on the solenoid. Try shorting the solenoid to see if it will start - top terminal to small spade connection.

Battery went flat within 2 hours of my shutting off the engine. RPM's had been up over the 1500 range. No problems indicated with the charging system. Seems like something grounded (earthed) out, and I'm guessing within the tachometer system, since inserting the key will cause the tach to read 2000 RPM. But I can't find that short. But all ideas are welcome. Together, we'll all work it out.

I have 3340 that flakes out. Lights go on and off , cab light goes off when I hit brakes ( this is new) Cab light doesn't come on.

I hit the area where key is and 99% of the time it works. This includes not starting.

I don't have a short. So my suggestion might be manure
but it sure can't hurt. I have attempted to get at the key asemble but it defies my attempts. I have traced all my problem to key switch, last I knew I could get one from SSB tractors in NY USA but it was like $75. I figure when the Fonzie ( from happy days) effect stops working I will replace it.

I hope all this made sense.

Perhaps I need a rubber mallet? The Fonzie method it what I use to keep the radio and wipers working on my F-350. My hands are staying sore....

The problem is in the key switch, not the start button. If I insert the key all the way, then pull it back out until it's barely catching in the keyway, it makes electrical contact and we can fire right up. Found a new key switch for US$44, but lack of work equals lack of cash, so.....

where did you find a new key swith for $44

As I said the best price was around $75 before shipping.
