I had a problem with my brakes on my 5245 a year ago. I replaced both master cylinders and it helped some. My right brake didn't work at all and would inject air into the system. My left brake would work ok until this year. Now I have nothing and both pedals go to the floor. I can stick my finger into the brake drums and they are all wet. I assume both slave cylinders in the brake drums are shot.
This fix is a major undertaking having to remove both gear portals / axles. While I am in there I will have to replace the brake shoes since they have been soaked in brake fluid. I am curious where I can get the best quality slave cylinders so that I don't have to do this again a few years from now.???
I dont think there is much difference in quality for the slave cylinders. On the 2 series, the master cylinders from PAL wer major troublecausers. With a Fragokov replacement, it's all over.
The slave cylinders never gave much trouble. I think as long as you use originals, nothing will go wrong.
I have the same brake problem and have been using the hand brake exclusively. It looks like a MAJOR job! My rear tires are liquid- filled and very heavy. Just getting them off requires special equipment. Those slave cylinders are very difficult to get to so I have been putting off the job....
I don't have the liquid filled tire problem, but it still looks like a major job. I am just wondering how to handle the heavy axles once the are un-bolted. Plus the fact that after it is replaced - I don't want to do it again for a long long time. My tractor is a 1989 with about 950 hours. Seems like it should last longer.
I use Silicone Brake fluid as it doesn't absorb water.Also I have found that just putting the cap off an aerosol can over the brake fluid cap keeps rain water out of the brake fluid and stops the cylinders corroding.
