A few questions, where would be best to buy a starter for 5545 I'm in Australia.

What would cause engine to lock up other than seizing? Last time we used it we pull started it (because of no starter working) and it pull started without a problem, within the first couple hundred meters. Now a couple months latter I went to pull start again and when in gear the wheels turn in opposite directions but when in neutral both wheels turn forward. So this makes me believe the engine isn't turning over at all, are the 5545 prone to hydro-locking? Also how is the best way to force the engine to turn over.

Lastly does anyone know what each lever on the tractor actually does, because the best I have is a few pictures on their and that's it. I was wondering how I engage 4WD or is it suppose to always be in 4WD?

Hi,

If you've got water in the bores you must not force it. You will have to take the injectors out, stand back as much as possible and spin it on the starter. Is it standing outside so rain is going down the exhaust ? An upturned bean can over the exhaust will cure this !!!

Put the hi-lo gear range lever in neutral, put the PTO lever in ground speed pto, put the transmission in reverse and hook up a PTO shaft to another tractor that just runs on 540 PTO. When you release the clutch (travel clutch !!) on the 5545 the engine will turn or the other tractor will stall...

Good trick Renze ...... just make sure it is at least a 70hp PTO shaft or you will split the yoke in 2.
And dont rev the pony tractor too hard!
Might be safer to have the PTO in the 1000rpm setting on the Zetor ? Not that I can get mine to work/engage in that position.
Also when you were trying to tow start it, are you sure it was in High ratio and not in low ratio?
If it is in low it will just lock up the wheels, I would use High 2nd or 3rd for tow starting, and tow it about 5-10kph.
If you suspect it is locked up try turning the flywheel using a big screw driver through the hole where the starter should be.
It should turn quite easily unless there is something horribly wrong, such as water/Rust in the cyl.
If it turns a about 1/4 of a turn and then stops suddenly it is likely hydraulicing and you will need to pull the injectors out (or wedge the exhaust valves open by adjusting or packing the rockers) then wind it over (using Renze's method) to blow out the water or oil or diesel (whatever is causing the problem).

You should have no problem getting a s/h starter from your local tractor wrecker, i picked one up yesterday just to keep as a spare, cost me NZ$100, they had about 6 Zetor UR1 series wrecking, i spent about 2 hours there :)

When tow starting an engine that hasnt been running for a few months, in winter, i start in 5th gear to turn it over, usually it starts in 4th when the other is in 3 at 2000rpm.

But the PTO trick allways works, but once our 4712 died when sling starting a Fergie 133 right after it started to putt-putt: There was smoke coming from the crankcase, and when we checked (too late off course) there was rust on the oil dipstick !! The Fergie was seized like a mad.... so later scrapped :)

if you cant get parts locally.... http://www.eshop-rychle.cz/ceskenaradi/eshop/40-1-ZETOR -5511-5545-5611-5645-5647
they ship international

I'm not even sure of how to get it in low range... lol but yes it was high range 4th as it has a slight miss so trying to run the tractor up a hill in 5th it would stall so we always pull start in 4th not to mention that only the right hand brake works...

Sorry for the late reply, seems subscribing doesn't work.. or gmail completely blocks the auto email

As for the ideas, I'll be sure to try it out, I had already pulled out the radiator and fan so I could get to crank shaft for manual turn over but sadly I don't have the right tools I think it will take a 1 & 11/16" socket but the closest I have is 1 & 5/8" (too small) and 1 & 6/8" (too big)

Hey guys, just an update.

Looks like my problem is a leaking gasket or head. Although no oil is present in the water that came out (not any I could see anyway). But removing the radiator which in turn drained the engine of all existing coolant released the lock up. So I must have a slight enough leak that gave a slight release of the pressure, I put the radiator and fan back on today and towed it not even 200m and it started like usual. So I'll be ordering a starter motor once I've got the cash.

Thanks for the ideas.

Also I did get an email back from one of the suppliers I found that sell parts in america, they gave me a link to a company that makes spare tractor parts in new zealand.

Just thought I'd share for anyone that happens to come across this thread from Aus/NZ

Hi, interesting, i had not come across them yet..........
The Vapormatic Company Limited. Registered in England and Wales No. 538655.
Registered Office: PO Box 58, Kestrel Way, Sowton Industrial Estate, Exeter, Devon, England. EX2 7NB[/].

UK Head office, not making anything in NZ as far as i can tell, but importing from.... (My guess would be China, but not sure)
3 branch offices in NZ (Hamilton, Palmerston North, and Christchurch)
Good website, lots of good photos, but no pricing and very little info about what model tractor each part fits!.
They do have Brake shoes Hydraulic pumps, ball joints, and Thermostats, and various bearings for UR1's in stock and lots of later model stuff.
Their Starter motors and Alternators are interesting, but very little or no info as to what fits what........ You would need to go in with a sample to get the correct fitment.... unless they have a cross-reference that they have not published in the website.

Hi Malahide, sorry I haven't chimed in earlier! If you find a Sparex dealer in Aus, they do OEM quality parts at great prices. Other than that, there is a company called Ashdown that would be able to supply a starter to fit. Ask for a gear reduction starter if they have the option, as they spin the engine quicker with less current draw!
