hi, can any one help .
our 5748 cut out while mowing, it turned out to more than just fuel problems, heads where removed by a local mechanic who changed head gaskets, but still won,t start, and sprayed a load of easy start in to engine no help, dad then removed sump to find lumps of piston, so we removed all pistons to find no piston faults only 2 x top rings broken on 1 and 2 cylinders.
we changed all rings and big ends. lumps of pistons turned out to be from compressor unit , piston stuck in top of cylinder causing conrod to rip gudgeon pin out of piston and also shearing woodruff key in pump/comp shaft timing gear. after numerous turning timing marks lined up. removed timing gear, inj pump and shaft . replaced damaged parts ,refitted timing gear and key, then refitted pump, built up engine again. on trying to start tractor plenty of smoke but wont fire, asked a tractor mechanic who said pump might be out 180 degrees.,so removed pump again and wound it on a turn, same as before smoke no fire, ive now tried spill timing engine to see where pump is injecting, removing collar on number 1 on injection pump removing spring and metering valve, then replacing collar and fitting a bend round old piece of injector pipe cut off at an angle. now turning the engine in clockwise direction fuel stops on number one after the timing marks 22 to 18 on fly wheel pass mark on gearbox casing, they, ved passed by 30 to 40mm and it only stops by some other marks that look like 110. to me this looks to late ???. is it possible pump shaft twisted or timing still out . or am I doing something wrong. many thanks bgda

Yes, the compressor shaft that drives the fuel pump, twist when the compressor jams.

Hi,

When checking timing there's no need to remove the metering valve etc. The fuel should START to appear at 23' not stop. Renze is correct, the shafts do twist. Also key on pump drive dog shear occasionally.
