Does anyone know why the clutch on my tractor slips badly when pulling away uphill in high gear ratios then is reluctant to disengage, only releasing when heavy braking is applied? Is this an adjustment thing or a terminal symptom requiring a replacement clutch assembly?

Do you mean it slips when you drive away, but it will only release when -you push the clutch pedal- AND -you hit the brakes hard- ??

Or do you mean that it will slip when engaging but when you try to force it to slip, the force needed is bigger ??

There is a small panel, with slots in it. I think you could check if any oil is inside the clutch housing, maybe the clutch plates get greasy because of a leak of one of the transmission sealings.

It is also possible that the splines of the clutch plates have worn, so that it is hard to slide over the main transmission shaft.
Although, this is VERY uncommon on a Zetor , because mostly the slide problem is due to a design error.

The symptom is scenario number one, slips on pull away then only releases when clutch pesal is depressed AND hard braking applied........ I will check out your suggestions regarding oil on the plates. Any other ideas welcome! Thanks for this!

Hmmm.... I tried to remember the 4712 clutch problem we had...

I think it's the same problem. I think you should adjust the clutch pressure fingers. Under that little cover, through the hole, you can adjust the bolts on the ends of the clutch push fingers. If you shorten them by turning them in for two or three strokes, you could be driving for some years efore you really need to change the clutch.

Changeing a clutch on a 4712 is a 5 hour job, starting after dinner at 7, and have it running at 11'o clock in the same evening.
If you have no experience and are doing this alone, count on 7-8 hours. Workshops calculate one man, 6 hours for it.

My cousin also has a 6178 which i am currently working on for him. We do not have a problem with the clutch yet, but we do have problems with the brakes, handbrake, rear hydrolics. i do not know much about tractors, so any help that you could give me i would appriciate it. Thanks Stuart

Out of curiosity are you from the uk. yourself.

Hello Stuart, Yes I am from the UK in Gloucestershire and I have been through some brake repairs! I am currently working on the electrics and instrumentation. If you have any idea what colour or finish the instrument panel should have I would be interested as I have finest quality rust!;)

i will add photos asap.

have you seen the just added 7 series history ? click zetor history in the right hand menu, UR1 1972-1978
