Got cover on with new gaskets on shift lever housing--levers(hi/low and pto) shift easy and 240/1000 selector turns easy 1/4 turn....no pto and no lift at all in 540 position--in 1000 position have lift with pto turning but no lift any other position....will not shift into 2nd and 3rd gear.Does any of this craziness make any sense ---I am now desperate--I have done all on earth I know to do....what is the secret? Please help ..... Thanks

Hi,

The 540/1000 lever should move a full half turn, so you haven't got the lever right somewhere. Have you had the lever off the top cover? I believe it will go back on in the wrong position. Don't know about 2nd 3rd problem. Try loosening the spring loaded plunger for that rail. I believe it is 3rd from right sitting in the seat.

I thought I remembered you saying that the 540/1000 lever should turn more than what mine is turning..Yes, I have had the lever off of the top. On top of the cover it is basically just a roll pin through a shaft so we have tried different positions there--BUT under the cover the 540/1000 has like an offset lobe that sits in a "tray" on the end of the slider bar--we have tried different positions there also--will pop the cover again today and try other positions to get the full 1/2 turn of the 540/1000 lever.........Also will remove the 2nd and 3rd gear detents to see what happens....Thanks so much--man this thing has been aggravating...

It's like something slips inside--before I cranked it last night the pto lever was moving free but had no 2nd and 3rd gear(jammed-shift lever could not move into those two gears) cranked the tractor-moved through the different pto lever positions-they did not respond correctly BUt at least the lever moved--after cranking it and moving the lever now the lever won't move free---540/1000 lever only moved 1/4 turn--when turning it you hear a clunking sound up toward the shift lever like it is bumping gears instead of meshing them..

Transmission cover off again....surely just something simple I'm just not seeimg....Rails lined up where detents drop in--still looks impossible for the 540/1000 lever to rotate a full half turn...marked how it was lined up when it came out this time--I know where it is marked is wrong..or must be since it will not rotate a full half turn....thoughts? suggestions?? Thanks

With our 5245 it involved light hammer tapping and lots of WD40 to get it into 1000rpm... the previous owner never used it.

Just looked closer and this splined piece that goes on top of the gearbox cover has a stop built in where it does not rotate more than 1/4 turn. I will never use 1000 either, just want to get it installed where it is in 540 and not interfere with anything else. But need the pto settings to work where you have lift without pto spinning and lift with pto spinning. Thanks

Thanks-went and checked the 540/1000 fork and it appears to be in the slot----from the top can't wiggle the fork forward or backwards, no extra play..I have a guy coming Tuesday who supposedly has tractor mechanic experience. Other than lining up the slots for the 6 detents, getting the hi/low lever and pto lever in their slots, and getting the offset cam on the bottom of the cover in its square slot --do you or anyone you can ask know of any other tips or things I should do to be sure the cover goes back on flawlessly and hoprfully everything works-----actually this will ne the first time to put it back together with all new gaskets...If I can just get the 540 speed to work and have lift with no pto spin and have lift with pto spin......
