Evening!
New to this,so apologies beforehand.
Recently acquired a 5711,my First ever tractor, its done 7500 hrs,is chucking out masses of black smoke when its running, only electrics working is the starter.,and the rear lift works fine if slowly, but drops once switched off (any way of locking it up?).
Whipped the heads off today,to give it a decoke,3 of 4 inlet valves were really caked up.Maybe this is due to there being NO clearance on the tappets!!! Anyone know what the clearance should be?Can the rule of 9 be used here when adjusting the tappets?
I`d heard people speak badly about these things, but after working a day or two on mine I`m really impressed!
Any advice would be appreciated.

What's the rule of 9 ???

intake 0,2 mm exhaust 0,3mm
for the newer engines from the 80's it's 0.25 for exhaust and intake.

I rebuilt the heads of my 5245 last winter, polishing the valves cost only 3 euro per valve, at a machine shop.

The "rule of nine" is very complicated way of adjusting tappets;) i think it goes something like==== when number 1 valve opens, you take 1 from 9 which is 8, so you adjust number 8 valve:sneaky: it is very stupid thing;) i just adjust the tappet when it is at bottom of camshaft ;)

Thats great,Thanks for that Valve info-much appreciated.
The rule of 9 is a faf,but it does work well.As you say,when 3 is open,adjust 6. When 2 is open,adjust 7,etc etc.
This forums great isnt it-really glad we found it!
Cheers.

The "rule of nine" is only any use on 4 cylinder engines with a valve layout of Ex-In-In-Ex-Ex-In-In-Ex Zetor Unified 1 series & most diesel engines have a valve layout of Ex-In-Ex-In-Ex-In-Ex-In

Thanks for telling me that-could have been disastrous eh!? Any idea what the sequence should be then?

Use this method.
Adjust valves 1 & 2 with 7 & 8 on the rock.
Adjust valves 3 & 4 with 5 & 6 on the rock.
Adjust valves 5 & 6 with 3 & 4 on the rock.
Adjust valves 7 & 8 with 1 & 2 on the rock.
Valve clearance is checked with a cold engine.
Inlet (short rocker arm) 0.2mm.
Exhaust (long rocker arm) 0.3mm.
