Transmission is jammed between 4th & 5th gears. I removed the gear shifter to access the top of the transmission and still not able to move slider back in place. Any ideas to correct the problem.

Thanks

Before you go any further , block one back wheel and jack up the other with the brake off. you may have "wind up" holding the gears together. Also make sure its not in 4wd. if it is you may have to jack up a front wheel also. then try and move the selector.

Hello,
I tried turning the back wheel while it was jacked up, it's not in 4x4 either. Still could not get it out of 5th gear???? R & 1st will slide forward and back, so will 2nd & 3rd. It's just 5th gear that stays jammed "forward". Anything else or a sequence to spin the tire???

thanks

Does it feel like the selector is trying to move the gear?or is the rail that it runs on locked? it may be that the detent has worn and locked up the rail. Worth checking next.
Then again, its possible that one of the roller bearings in the centre of the gear that shifts has broken up and the selector collar has dropped down. These bearings are not expensive :7 in UK, but the labour time to fix is. You cant see the bearings without disassambling the gearbox. Alternatively, this is one of the gears with synchromesh, so it may be something to do with that.
Maybe Mike has a better idea !!

Hi,

Dave has covered it pretty well.
I think if any of the synchro gears are pushed too far, the springs can come out of the centre hub. Drain the oil and try fishing with a magnet in the bottom of the box and see if anything appears. I think, with a struggle, the synchro hubs can be re-assembled in the box but I've never tried. Also you could try having a look at the magnet screwed into the pump plate under the transmission housing. (It is a round aluminium bung about 75mm dia)

Good fishing

Mike

Have you tried while the detent spring bolt was taken out ?

Still having problems. I have tried with the detent bolt out and when I attempt to push it back to neutral there is a solid "thump" noise. I think I'll try removing the top of the gear case and have a look inside. I will keep you updated.
