I own a zetor 8540.I have to place a lot of weight on gearlever to select 1st or 2nd gear. Doesn't grunch just requires extreme pressure to select. 3rd and 4th gear are fine. Any ideas very much appreciated.:)

I cant tell. Just unbolt the lever and inspection is the first thing to start...

Hay thanks for the reply....

we were hopeing someone would say start by ajusting the clutch up abit first and go from there.....

the quadrant top has been off before with last owner......

we will look at both in the weekend and let you know ...thanks

Just a update......... we tryed to bleed the clutch and had trouble as there was air coming out the slave with the fluid....but dont think the total problem lays there ....there was a spring missing off the clutch peddel and thought it mite not allow the peddel to return fully so tryed the brake peddel spring with no luck....

only thing left is to pull the top of the gearbox quadrant off like was mentioned.....but its getting used at the mo for feeding out over winter here in NZ and will have to wait....

If your 8540 is earlier production model it would have Czech synchros in gearbox which did not have long life and resulted in progressively difficult gear shifting. These synchros were replaced with better quality "graziano" synchros in later models.
They are not directly interchangeable but I think that a kit was available to upgrade to graziano

"Thanks for your Reply" tractor is a 1996 and only done 1800 hrs so hopefuly doesnt apply to use.....plus it was hard to select gears not long from new(so told from 1st owner).....

(JD 2700)

We had also been told by the New Zealand Agent or by one of there mechanic's that no longer works there in Hamilton.....

that there was meant to be a SIMPLE mod that could be done to fix the sticky movement be have no idea of what sort of mod....

this tractor is a rebadged 8540 Zetor ...came out the zetor factory and John Deere painted it green.....and called it a JD2700

maybe its a special tractor that came from the back of the factory made up of odd spares....

Under the gearlever there is a device, shaped like an egg. i dont know how exactly, i tell you nwhat i've heard. If you put this thing upside down, with the blunt edge of the egg down, it will be much smoother.

Kermet,
I have been talking about your problem to mates and one has good knowledge of these tractors. He is certain that the lever which moves selectors was changed. The change was a new two part lever mechanism controlling selector rods which had a lower pivot point giving better and more definite [sharply forceful] action. The housing on top of gearbox has to be changed also. He says that this is for 3 speed box - doesnt know about 4 speed. If yours is 3 speed he will try to root out diagram and part nos. He reckons that your tractor has the older "hard" change setup. Post if you want info and I'll do my best.

Hay thanks Balti......

"Yes please" it is a 4 speed box.

I have removed top of box. I manually selected gears using my fingers pushing on sliding dogs. They all went in with no problem. We found when holding the springs down on ball bearings (that locate poision) as they would normally sit with top on, made it about 5 times harder to select. So with reassembly I placed softer spring on 1st and 2nd gear, no real difference.... With clutch fully depressed have noticed tractor will rock forward very slighty only (mm's) when placing in 1st gear. But once in you can pull back to neutral and try again "no rock"! Clutch appears fine and is depressing fully. 10% of the time will select 1st gear with ease. Then next time I would have to lean on gear lever with extreme pressure. Have taken photo of underside of gear lever dog which selects all gears if this is any help . I fee problem is still at this point?

Sorry for the picture (http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~filez/JD2700.htm)

**Have also heard from company in New Zealand that new replacment quadrant's have been changed too...

Edited: Renze
there wasnt anything that could be put back together in any other way......thanks tho

**OOps i was meant to say we have heard that there is a inspection cover that can be taken off and some adjustment made as it was over titened in the factory.......
